Hand Painted Vintage Calf Bucket 1
Calf Buckets were used on the farm (maybe still are) to feed baby calves when the mother's milk was quarantined or the calf was orphaned. The bracket on the back allowed it to be hung on a fence board, and the opening at the bottom front had a nipple, letting the calf nurse while the farmer went and did other chores. Quite the time saver as you can string up a bunch of buckets instead of bottle feeding them all!
The painting of a Holstein dairy farm I did in latex house paints, then applied a couple of layers of spar urethane for protection. The bracket I painted to look like old metal. The bucket measures 10 1/2" high and 12 1/2" wide.
I love to use these old buckets for flowers, wine coolers, or to hold fruit for display. If you are going to use it with ice or water, I suggest one of those small clear waste basket liners just for safe measure, as I do not guarantee the water tightness of this item. I have had to reshape it in a couple of areas, mainly the bottom.
While this item does have its functionality, I highly recommend gentle care with the painting on it. It does have two coats of urethane, but it is still susceptible to scratches if handled in a rough manner. The paint is exterior based, but I would not leave it out in the sun on a permanent basis as there could potentially be a color shift over time.
Champagne not included.
